charlie + callie: lifestyle.

blonde photo lifestyle sessions = playtime!

BLONDEPHOTO-221-8017

i had so much fun playing with charlie + callie! a few weeks ago i spent the afternoon with these two as they showed me their circus tricks, played dress up, made art, and even built all sorts of crazy things! the cold winter weather didn’t stop them from showing me how they climb trees, race around on scooters and have fun together! in addition to charlie + callie, i had the joy of meeting lucy – the spunkiest little puppy ever! her + charlie are best buds and it was an absolute riot watching them play together! the only time lucy didn’t have charlie’s full attention was when he was busy playing with his awesome big sister callie – and lucy would either jump in the mix or watch anxiously from the sidelines, tail wagging! not only the kids super fun, but they have some pretty cool parents, and we managed to sneak in a few quick family photos as well! i had a blast with this family – it was the perfect way to spend a cold winter day! thanks guys – enjoy!

gene + margie: a love story.

the power of love.

sulkowski-23-7644

i recently had the opportunity to do more photography for the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) – an amazing medical rehabilitation network that provides outstanding care + service to thousands of patients. through working with NRH i have documented amazing stories of recovery and gained incredible insight into the human spirit. however, nothing could have prepared me for the truly amazing story of gene + margie.

almost 5 years ago gene + margie’s world was turned upside down. in may 2004 gene stepped on a carpet tack while renovating his home – a minor incident that, within two weeks, triggered a series of severe medical problems. blood poisoning and  hemorrhagic stroke put gene was in grave danger. he was septic, and underwent surgery to have breathing and feeding tubes inserted. doctors estimated gene’s chance of survival at a mere 5%.

his wife margie refused to listen to the countless doctors and family who told her that there was no chance for gene. even if he did survive, they warned he would likely never recover. margie remained strong and completely devoted herself to caring for her husband. after 6 weeks in the ICU, gene spent 6 months in a rehabilitation hospital where he battled seizures, kidney failure, internal bleeding, heart irregularities and other complications. when he was stable enough to be released from the hospital, margie ignored suggestions to place gene in a nursing home. she decided to care for him herself and took him home.

after transforming their home and her life to care for her husband, margie began to see her efforts pay off as gene made slow, steady progress. when margie realized gene needed further therapy to fully recover, she turned to NRH. although he was still unable to speak and confined to a wheelchair, gene began physical, occupational + speech therapy twice a week at the NRH regional rehab center near their home. the superior care from the center combined with margie’s tough love and dedication resulted in a truly miraculous outcome. gene began walking, eating, and speaking. he overcame all the odds that science deemed nearly impossible because of his perserverence, NRH’s expertise, and ultimately, margie’s love.

gene continues to improve and struggles to regain his strength and speech. however, his ability to laugh, to smile and to love are stronger today than ever.

to me, margie and gene are inspiring beyond words. it was a true privilege to meet them and to hear their story – it gave me a deeper understanding of what love and marriage is truly about. i have such great admiration and respect for margie’s incredible self-sacrifice and enduring hope. her unbreakable spirit is remarkable. the afternoon i spent with this couple left a lasting impact on me. i am in complete awe of their fantastic attitude and resilience when faced with such tragedy, and i am transfixed by the power of their truly immeasurable love. margie + gene are proof that love can conquer all.

anyone who has ever doubted the power of love needs to meet this couple.

inauguration 2009!

1.20.09 :: dc welcomes president barack obama.

blonde-photo-416-4601
proud local artists inspired by obama.

after my exciting morning jaunt (inauguration part I HERE) there was nothing that could keep me from the streets of DC today! bearing in mind the frigid temperatures, we purposely set out late – walking west from chinatown along F ST. the street vendors were out in full force like i’ve never seen – since the streets all around the mall were completely closed to traffic (blocked sporadically by parked metro buses!) they were filled with vendors peddling every type of souvenir imaginable! buttons, boas, hats, puppets, posters, calendars, blankets, and more were auctioned to the thousands passerbys. cutting north to avoid the parade route (sectioned off by heavy duty fences + concrete barricades) we passed the white house and st john’s episcopal church where the obama family attended service this morning. since i knew the mall was closed east of 14th st (filled to capacity!) we pressed on to the lincoln memorial and walked along the mall toward the washington monument. massive jumbotrons displayed the arrival of all the dignitaries of the day and music blasted from the speakers. we positioned ourselves in front of one of the big screens just west of the monument and awaited the start of the ceremony. my goal was not to be as close as possible to the action, but rather just be part of the moment. i loved observing the event amidst a ridiculous mess of enthusiastic people – it was perfect!

the weather was freezing. the crowd was massive. the excitement was palpable. and when barack obama appeared on screen people went wild. i stood shoulder to shoulder with my fellow americans, watching as america inaugurated our 44th president. the chanting of “O-BA-MA” and the clicking of thousands of cameras ceased as he took the stage. collectively, we listened to president obama’s inspiring words – an 18 minute inaugural speech that moved people to tears. and brought about waves of cheering and clapping from an emotional audience.

like so many people, i am so grateful that i was able to be a part of this day. i am prouder than ever to be an american and i am hopeful + optimistic about the future.

thank you president obama, and welcome to dc!

inauguration 2009: an early look!

dc buzzes with pre-dawn crowds.

blonde-photo-410-4556
hundreds of people wait to enter the mall at 3rd + D NW, 6:45am.

i headed out of my apartment this morning to get a look at the crowds and a feel for the city before dawm and i was amazed at the number of people already out! it was freezing (15 degrees!) and military police + hummers lined the barricaded streets, but everyone was in such good spirits – singing, dancing, and chatting as they streamed towards the mall. i continue to be amazed by how polite and considerate everyone is despite the crowds – there is no chaos, just excitement. there were vendors selling tshirts, buttons, and brochures, good samaritans giving out free hot coffee, and people linked arm-in-arm with friends + family decked out in obama gear. i found myself next to local musician nechesa morgan who, hailing from dc but now lives in new york, was playing her obama inauguration song – so awesome! i plan on heading back out in a few hours – one of the benefits of living so close to the capitol, even with the crowds i’m just a short walk from the action!

enjoy – and happy inauguration!
