back from greece!

me + mamasita enjoying the sunset at oia on the greek island of santorini. if i look apprehensive it’s because a stranger is handling my fancy camera – on a cliff nonetheless – and not because i’m not thoroughly enjoying myself (which of course, i was!)

hello! yes, i have returned from a wonderful escape to the greek islands…and am furiously working through the 300+ emails, phone calls, and of course, diligently editing photos! i’ll be posting a few blogs and stories from greece very soon, i have some wedding that need attention first! also, i’m headed out to LA on thursday for a few days to shoot and then i’ll be traveling in august as well…more about that upcoming trip (so excited!) after i share everything about the greek islands!

so stay tuned! photos from greece coming soon!

yasas from greece!

It’s sunday morning and I’m laying on the pristine white beach of cape firiplaka, the aqua waters of the mediterranean sprawled out before me. Behind me rises a wall of rock, and beyond that a dusty road leading inland.
This is the tiny island of milos, about 100 miles southeast of mainland greece. Yesterday we arrived on a slow ferry from fabulous santorini where we marveled at the spectacular views at oia and lounged on the black sand beaches of kamari.
Every night we sleep facing the sea in simple rooms inside idyllic whitewashed houses with blue shutters and doors. In santorini, our host, a tiny older greek woman, made us coffee and bread each morning and kissed us goodbye when we departed on the fourth day.
Each night we dine on fresh bread, greek salads and seafood under the stars. In the fishing village of pollonia on milos we watch the octopus drying in the sun all day before it is served cooked in olive and drenched with lemon. The wine is always flowing, and the waiters never want you to leave your table, keeping your glass full late into the night.
We rise early each morning, awakened by the sun rising and spilling in through the open windows and doors, stopping at the bakery for fresh village bread before hopping in the tiny red volkswagon we rented to explore the 70+ beaches of milos, coined “the island of colors.”
In athens we explored the acropolis and other ancient wonders, thrilled to achieve such proximity to history, and we dined in the crowded squares amongst the bustling city dwellers. However, these greek isles are the reason we flew thousands of miles to the mediterranean: to swim in the aegean sea, to spend every moment in the fresh air, lounging all day under the sun and all night dining and sleeping beneath the moon.

I imagined I’d be writing more here, but instead I’ve been journaling by hand, reflecting on the days in a small bound notebook, taking photos of everything that inspires me…and I’ll share it all when I return.
Until then, ‘yasas!’ – to your health! and all my best…

dana + brian: married!

an international affair.

dana + brian’s wedding at the inn at vaucluse spring in stephen’s city, virginia was amazing! guests hailed from dozens of countries all over the world and gathered to watch dana + brian unite their lives together. dana is from the states and brian is from zimbabwe, so they incorporated elements of both cultures into the ceremony and reception. my favorite was the dancing – which started with swing lessons from dana’s family and then zimbabwean traditional dance led by brian! afterwards, everyone danced to a mix of music and had a fabulous time…i don’t think dana’s grandmother ever left the dance floor!

despite the crazy thunderstorms happening outside, the party was strong under the tent – with some great toasts (dana’s sister’s speech made me cry, brian’s best man’s speech made me laugh) excellent dance moves and great energy and excitement for this amazing couple.

dana + brian: thank you so much for having me at your wedding! it was a joy to document your day and get to know your friends and family…CONGRATULATIONS!!

enjoy!

yeti + carl: married!

come rain or come shine…

yeti + carl are married! their fabulous june wedding was one wild celebration that gave mother nature a run for her money! on one of the hottest days of the year yeti + carl said “i do” in a sweltering church, sans air conditioning, fanned (literally) by their family + friends. as if the heat wasn’t enough, a serious summer storm swept in and threatened to take down the house! the reception was held on the water at celebrations on the bay, under a massive tent. strong winds knocked out power, and we were left in the dark without music, without lights, and once again without AC! not to be discouraged, this fantastic sierra leonian celebration continued, with much dancing, cheering, toasting, and undeniable energy and excitement for yeti + carl.

this wedding was a joint collaboration between myself and MK – a BLONDE PHOTO/MARY KATE MCKENNA production that Mk refers to as MK & J! it was wonderful as always shooting with MK, and at a festive sierra leonian wedding it would have been impossible to do it alone! there are so many wonderful traditions and events happening at once that one photog is never enough, and luckily we have experience with african weddings and so we knew exactly what we were in for – the ultimate celebration! yay for yeti + carl!

enjoy!
