matt + leslie engagement photos.

matt and leslie are getting married in just six weeks!

i am really excited for these two, they are so fun to be around and i’m really looking forward to their wedding. turns out matt and i went to the same grade school and high school, and his mom was one of my favorite teachers! such a small world!

we had only an hour to snap some quick pics – so we ran around the tidal basin, i did my best to get matt to smile, and he practiced dipping leslie for the wedding ;)

what you won’t see below are some of the hilarious outtakes from the shoot…these two are so funny!

matt and leslie you guys are great, and i can’t wait until your wedding!

enjoy!

yvon + seth engagement photos.

ok, these two are ambitious…their upcoming wedding (just 2 months away!) is playing on a dc theme – so they wanted engagement photos in front of a number of dc monuments…sounded like so much fun, so i set aside the entire sunday thinking we’d hop around and scout out some of their favorites.

it didn’t exactly work out that way.

yvon and seth picked me up at 6pm and we chased the sun (and rain clouds!) as we hurried from one monument to the next…by foot and by car, yvon skillfully manuvering around and seth guiding us…it was crazy!

we started at the lincoln, then the vietnam wall, then the korean war memorial…got the washington monument and reflecting pool, and i feared we’d only make half the list. then we were back in the car and onto the wwII memorial, they ran across the street to get jefferson behind them, and then we jetted towards the smithsonian and the capital.

one last jaunt took us to alexander hamilton and last of all, the white house!

as the sun slipped completely away, we were finished, in less than 2 hours…and with 10+ monuments! i was amazed! it was so much fun, and yvon and seth are so adorable together…and best of all the pics turned out great! i can’t wait to shoot thier wedding in october!

african wedding traditions…

last night i attended a traditional sierra leonian pre-wedding ceremony, in which the families of the bride and groom meet, accept each other, and make plans for the wedding…after the interrogations, discussions, and dowry, there is lots of eating, drinking and dancing to celebrate…i’ll post some pics of the event and the wedding (tomorrow!) later this weekend, but definitely check out the way MK tells the story with her awesome photo essay…here.

so much fun!

bashie + ari.

bashie’s wedding day started early at her suite at the courtyard marriott in hunt valley, where hair and make-up kicked off at 8am.
bashie has 4 younger sisters, one older sister, one sister-in-law, 2 brothers, and 4 nephews, all of whom were in the suite at some point (and at times, all at once) in addition to the stylist, makeup artist, her assistant, bashie’s mom and dad…it was totally crazy…and it was SO MUCH FUN!
i spent over 5 hours with the girls as they got ready, and it literally flew by.
wendy spealman expertly styled the perfect curls and glossy locks of all 7 girls, including the bride.
moving about the room and taking turns, they each had their makeup perfectly applied in gorgeous shades by chana benzaquen — by and far one of the best makeup artists i’ve ever worked with. both wendy and chana were so awesome, we all had such a good time with the girls, and by the time they were ready and in their dresses it was all we could do not to feel like they were our sisters as well!
it was a truly awesome day, and the excitement just kept building as we all moved on to the grand lodge to join the other two photograhers and two videographers (lots of talent joining forces) for formal portraits and to greet the 300+ guests.
what followed was one of the wildest, greatest, most exciting orthodox celebrations i’ve ever attended.
from beginning to end, it was a whirlwind of singing and dancing, and drinking and dancing, and cheering and hugging, and dancing…did i mention how much they danced?? luckily dave hernandez – one of the nicest guys and such fun – was capturing every moment on video.
i absolutely love being a part of traditional wedding celebrations, and again felt so honored to be involved in such an intimate and lively testimonial to love and family and life.
bashie and ari are young and in love; they have incredible families and friends, and their whole life ahead of them.
i wish them all the luck and happiness that the world can offer.
by the end of the night i was feeling totally exhilarated, and very lucky to have spent the day in such remarkable company…what an absolutely fantastic job i have.
thank you bashie for letting me be part of your day…it was a joy and a pleasure.
i can’t wait until the next sister gets married! woo hoo!

national day of singapore.

although the national day of singapore is offically today, august 9, they celebrated last thursday night at the singapore embassy in dc.
ambassador chan heng chee was joined by the ambassadors of many asian nations, including malaysia, india, thailand and japan, as well as the ambassador of colombia, us secretary of commerce carlos gutierrez, secretary of veterans affairs james nicholson, and other distinguished us officials.
also invited (but not inattendance) were frances townsend and alphonso jackson – much to my personal dissapointment after closely following the HUD scandal that affordable housing finance magazine shed light on in their june issue…
nonetheless, it was a great event, with chee raising her glass to toast the united states as a valued ally and friend of singapore. congrats on 42 years!

organic wine.

the rockfish hosted an organic wine tasting at the restaurant tuesday night in annapolis…bacchus importers was on hand pouring frog’s leap sauvignon blanc, among others, and answering questions about the wine as well as the organic growing process. basically, organic wine is better for the land, better for your health, and better for your conscience. so drink up!

here’s what frog’s leap winemakers have to say about why they farm organically:

“If it makes sense that the grapes reflect the soils in which they’re grown, doesn’t it make sense to provide the most healthly, rich soil environment from which the vines can take their nutrients? Balancing our soils with organic matter results in deeply rooted vines and better quality fruit. Better quality grapes means better tasting wine. For us, organics just make good sense.”

*also* checkout more about how the rockfish is making some seriously impressive strides in promoting a local recycling program for area businesses and operating as a certified green business.

terralogos green home services was also part of this event, speaking with guests about how to effectively “invest in your home, not the power company!” – their company logo.
