amanda + dave: engaged!

for the love of kickball.

amanda + dave met and fell in love while playing kickball with friends + co-workers in baltimore city. dave proposed in april, and they are both so incredibly happy. they were so affectionate and loving throughout the shoot, i simply adored watching them together.  it’s easy to see how they fell in love with each other, and after a record 3-hour engagement session, i too am in love with amanda + dave.

they are a truly phenomenal couple. i had an amazing time photographing them as we made our way around baltimore finding great spots…they laughed, they kissed, and they kept putting their heads together and smiling!! i loved it! we played kickball on the hill, got dangerously close to the waters of the harbor, caught some sweet flare at sunset, rode the crazy carousel, and took some absolutely stellar photos – it was a total blast!

my mom is an all star.

a very happy mother’s day.

it’s true, my mom is an all star. she totally rocks and i had the best time hanging out with her today. mother’s day wasn’t much different than any other day for us, because my mom is a huge part of my life. we talk on the phone and e-mail everyday, go out to dinner often, and do fun/cultural/adventurous things together as much as possible. the only different thing about today was that we fully acknowledged the reason why we have this amazing relationship: because she is a phenomenal mother.

i am so thankful for all the love and guidance she has given me, and especially grateful for the unfaltering encouragement on all my many (and varied) adventures. i admire her for her strength and resolve, her patience and faith, and her incredible dedication to those in need. she is hard-working, independent, and strong willed. she is sassy, funny, and beautiful. she is my biggest fan, my greatest role model, and my best friend.

i am so proud that this woman is my mother.

in addition to all these things, she is also a great photographer, and today i surprised her with a sweet digital canon rebel and a few fun lenses! i’m pretty sure i was almost as excited about the camera as she was! it’s so cute…like a mini version of my 5D, and it takes great photos! and check out the amazing job raven at pulp in logan circle did of wrapping everything up – pulp has the absolute best gift wrap selection + service ever!

just another saturday night.

it’s always an adventure in the life of the blonde photographer.

this spectacle could only happen to me.

seriously.

i was driving home from an awesome engagement shoot in baltimore one minute, stranded in the ghetto the next…

it wasn’t until i was coming into the city on new york avenue that i noticed something wasn’t right with my car. i heard a rumbling sound and immediately freaked out. as much as i love my adorable passat, i’ve had more complications with this vehicle than any of the other dozen cars i’v owned in my lifetime. slowing down at a light, i realized that the sound i was hearing was a (shockingly my first ever!) flat tire. no big deal i thought (stupidly), refusing to pull over and investigate due to my undesirable location. also, i was less than 5 miles from home, so i decided to push on. this is when the rumbling progressed to a loud flapping, and i began to feel like i was driving on a time bomb. i rolled down the passenger window to get a better listen and was overwhelmed by the stench of burning rubber. not good. dialing roadside assistance, i continued to drive, slowly, with hazards on, down ny ave. – much to the chagrin and utter aggravation of my fellow drivers. let’s just say i got the finger at least a few times, and more honking than i heard from the crazed taxi drivers in south america.

panic stricken and certain i was going to cause an accident in the midst of this insanity, i turn off onto florida avenue and briefly consider pulling into a gas station for assistance. however, it’s after 11pm and i’m still not in the best part of town – not to mention i have all my gear on me, as well as my macbook pro, etc, so i’m not feeling good about stopping the car at all. so it’s no surprise that my first reaction upon seeing another car flagging me down was to hit the gas, fearful of looking vulnerable and skeptical of anyone truly wanting to “help” me. however, one glance at the four smiling, waving faces from the windows, and i reconsidered quickly. i pulled over and two were guys already walking towards my car. i decided they truly wanted to help me, not harm me, so trusting my instinct (ever-hopeful that all people are inherently good) i got out and proclaimed the obvious: “i have a really flat tire!”

really flat doesn’t even do this macerated piece of rubber justice. i can only assume it went flat somewhere on the bw parkway and began melting along ny ave. by the time i stopped, it was punctured and rippled and bizarre looking. minutes after the guys stopped, i heard sirens and saw an ambulance approaching. apparently, upon seeing the car askew, and a man on the ground they though they were responding to a call for an unconscious victim. next, the fire truck and EMS units arrived. even though i assured them everything was OK, within moments flares blazing behind my car (now flanked by the fire truck) and half a dozen firefighters were working on the tire.

i was overwhelmed by the spectacle, amazed by everyones willingness to help, and feeling so utterly useless i did the only things i knew how to do in a situation like this: thanked everyone profusely, provided comic relief, and grabbed my camera and started shooting.

kristen + neto: married!

in love in luray.

weddings are full of perfect and powerful moments…moments so meaningful that they have the potential to be remembered forever. cherished not only by the bride + groom, but by anyone lucky enough to witness and appreciate them. it is because of these moments that weddings have such a profound impact on me.

as a wedding photographer, i feel honored to be in the presence of so much love, lucky to be in the midst of such fantastic celebrations, and awed by the people that i meet. i am overwhelmed and thankful to be invited into peoples’ lives to witness and document the details of their most cherished moments.

and so I begin this post with a thank you to kristen + neto: your wedding was beautiful and amazing. thank you for welcoming me into your lives, your love is truly transcendent. parabéns!

.  .  .

kristen + neto’s wedding was a spectacular affair, a whirlwind weekend of true celebration. on saturday afternoon guests filled the bright white chairs on the great lawn of stone ridge manor and watched as the couple declared their love. they stood on the stone steps and promised to love each other forever…and when they kissed, neto held kristen’s face in his hands, pulled back to smile adoringly at her and then kissed her again…

the reception that followed was a true celebration. the music played and the champagne flowed, and the dancing never seemed to cease. the gorgeous, open tent was filled with love, energy and excitement. there was laughter and happiness. there were tears and emotion. there were many kisses and well wishes.

and there were countless moments that are certain to be remembered forever.

kristen + neto: rehearsal.

bridemaids, and groomsmen, and farm animals, oh my!

the festivities for kristen + neto’s fantastic wedding weekend kicked-off with the rehearsal on friday in the quaint little town of luray, virginia. i spent the afternoon and evening getting to know their awesome family + friends and taking photos of the dinner at the artisan’s grill, the rehearsal at the wedding site (the brand new, gorgeous stone ridge manor!) and at the speakeasy where everyone headed afterwards for cocktails and entertainment.
highlights included neto’s sister’s delicious brazilian cake, the adorable children that spoke to me in portuguese and stole my heart, the herd of cows that literally ate out of our hands, and one of the bridemaids (go robin!) singing at the speakeasy!
