habitat for humanity.

i had the awesome opportunity to work with dc habitat for humanity yesterday on their current project in northeast dc.

dc habitat just recently passed the 100th house marker and is underway on a 53-home project in the district, 27 of which are completed. contrary to popular belief habitat for humanity does not give away houses to homeless people – rather they work in partnership with low-income families to build affordable, decent homes, and sell them far below cost with no-profit, no-interest mortgages.

habitat builds homes using volunteer labor and donations, in addition to the 300 hours of “sweat equity” that future homeowners are required to complete.

along with about 25 other volunteers i spent the day working on one of 3 houses in varying stages of development,  (out of 6 that are currently under construction.) organized into three teams, we painted, laid drywall, hung vinyl siding, and stuffed insulation.

it was a tough, but very rewarding day, and i met some amazingly hardworking people – including the americorps crew leaders (yay scott!), local volunteers, and the organizers from dc habitat.

to learn more about habitat for humanity and its local affiliates visit www.habitat.org and consider volunteering or donating to this truly incredible organization.

ambassador yuri ushakov.

current russian ambassador yuri v. ushakov addressed guests at the russian embassy on tuesday night as part of a reception honoring former russian and us ambassadors. the event signified the continued celebration of this year’s 200th anniversary of us-russia diplomatic relations, to which ushakov toasted the crowd with a shot of vodka, proclaiming that “cold vodka is better than cold war.”

HTB TV was covering the event, and the renowned anatoly panchoshny, one of the best russian singer in the united states, perfomed as guests mingled and enjoyed traditional russian cuisine, and – of course – trays of vodka + pickles.

peter + mary.

i am still reeling from the amazing thai buddhist blessing wedding ceremony for peter + mary last weekend…it was so beautiful, so full of tradition and love, and such an embodiment of the devotion and commitment that defines marriage.

guests gathered outside of the wat yarnna rangsee buddhist monastery to bear witness to a series of blessing ceremonies that were rooted in both buddhist and folk traditions.

the buddhist ceremony: peter + mary bowed before the image of the buddha as the monks of the monastery looked on. together they recited buddhist prayers and chants, lit candles and incense before the image, and made offerings of flowers to the monks. they were each anointed with three white dots on their foreheads, made of powder and blessed by the monks. afterwards, the couple entered the monastery to present offerings of food to the monks – their first “act of merit” or good deed, performed together. this action served to link their good deeds together and signifies that they are destined to be together forever.

during the ceremony the couple performed every act simultaneously, and in perfect unison – a further demonstration of their newly joined lives. buddhists believe that when you meet someone and are meant to be together, you fall in love, and become a couple, because you have done this together in your past life as well. in turn, joint merits performed in this life ensure your future together beyond this life. in this way, love never ends.

the groom’s processional: peter and his family gathered at the entrance to the monastery and began their “entrance” – thai drums beating alongside him, peter led the way, with everyone chanting, singing, and dancing behind him…guests lined their path clapping and cheering them on. when peter reached the archway where mary waited with her parents, he had to find a way to “pay his way” in order to “pass through”…he dug in his pockets searching for adequate gifts! it was hilarious! everyone helped him out, he was allowed to pass, and greeted his bride enthusiastically with a kiss…

holy thread blessing: at this point the couple knelt side by side while white yarn headpieces called monkols were placed on the crown of their heads. connected to each other by a string, this holy looped thread is a symbol of unity and matrimony and “binds” them together as a couple. a puang malei, or floral lei, was also placed around the neck of both the bride and groom.

water blessing ceremony: using the sacred conch shell, guests took turns pouring blessed water over the hands of the bride and groom – a sign of respect and love, and an opportunity to intimately congratulate them.

afterwards, guests were treated to an expansive arrary of home-cooked thai food, and karaoke by members of the family!

to peter + mary: thank you so much for allowing me to witness such an incredible event; i feel so lucky to have documented your day. it was a beautiful ceremony and a truly memorable experience that i will treasure always. best of luck in your newest adventure: married life!

tracy + aaron.

tracy and aaron are pretty much the most outrageous couple ever. they are super funny, extremely outgoing, very silly, and totally in love…not to mention totally perfect for each other.

from the moment i met them both i knew this was going to be a crazy fun wedding – they both exude energy.
we had plenty of time to take fun getting ready pictures, especially of aaron and the boys. they were goofing around in this fancy conference room and i got some great shots of them on their cell phones ;)

we headed to the national arboretum to take portraits at the capital columns – wow! it was such a striking backdrop, and the bridal party looked great. it was here that they signed the ketubah – and they were married! but wait, there’s more! back to the arbor ballroom at the washington times building for the ceremony…which was beautiful. 150 guests looked on at tracy + aaron proclaimed their love for one another…

the reception. what can i even say? this was a fabulous reception. there was crazy dancing, starting with a beautiful choreographed first dance between the bride and groom, and peaking with the awesome hava nagila. there was also a hilarious performance by the groom’s brother (and best man), and brother-in-law where they (in keeping with tradition!) rapped to the couple. it was spectacular. they even donned sunglasses while rapping. tracy and aaron (and everyone else) howled with laughter and then gave them huge round of applause.

the biggest hit was – without a doubt – the photo booth. guests loved taking their picture in this party booth, and then pasting the images into the guestbook. tracy and aaron even made their way into the booth a couple of times – once with mk and i! it was so much fun…

at the very end of the night we took them into the tunnel that passes under new york avenue where they posed for pictures and generally acted silly while we snapped away. it was such a great time…

to tracy + aaron: thank you so much for letting me be part of your awesome wedding…it was beyond fun…i seriously had the time of my life and am thrilled just to have spent the day with you both. your love and energy is truly inspiring, and you have amazing friends and family. i wish nothing but the best for you both and all the exciting adventures to come…mazel tov!
