the mojave desert.

mojave-desert-16.jpg

there is nothing quite like driving through the california desert…especially with two fantastic friends who are also fantastic photographers. last week the photo road trip continued east from san diego into the colorado and mojave desert. every few miles we’d stop the car and get out to explore the incredible surroundings. this time of year the desert sun is warm and strong, but the air was so crisp and cool – it was completely amazing.

also, i discovered that i am pretty much in love with cactus – something i didnt really know until i stood in the center of a massive cholla garden…the prickly flowering cacti stretched along the sand as far as the horizon, where the desert floor seemed to rise directly into SNOW CAPPED mountains. incredible! there were also the fabulously photogenic ochillo cactus + the starkly beautiful joshua trees. not to mention fields of vibrant purple and bright yellow flowers everywhere, and the unforgettable blooming orange trees whose citrus gardenia scent permeated the air…ahh!

i simply loved the experience of just being in the middle of the blooming desert – once again completely awed by the beauty of nature. and lucky enough to have captured just a bit of with my camera.

green products + technology.

i was so excited to see my photos from the nationals park shoot a few weeks ago appear online in a fancy slideshow for green products + technology magazine.
i had so much fun touring the entire stadium and learning about all the green features that the park boasts. you can read the article + see the images online here and see a more complete slideshow of the images here.

mattjonelle-engagement-4.jpg

i had an absolute BLAST photographing matt + jonelle in NYC last weekend…they just got engaged and are so ecstatic! it was so much fun just being around them and capturing their incredible energy. they were up for anything and matt is so crazy he made us laugh many times over. he definitely did the best jump shot i’ve ever seen and they even broke out dancing in the middle of the street when a passing car cranked up the volume for us!! check out this AWESOME couple – matt + jonelle: you guys ROCK!

hannah + andy.

hannahandy-wedding-3.jpg

this blog is long overdue! hannah + andy tied the knot on a sublime afternoon last month in easton, maryland. everything was simply classic – including the beautiful bride! we had a fantastic engagement shoot the day before, and everyone went bowling that night after the rehearsal dinner. with all the fun anticipation, i was very excited for the big event! shooting hannah + andy’s wedding was such an honor, since i’ve gotten to know them so much better throughout this process and think the world of them both. i spent the afternoon documenting hannah’s getting ready and sneaking around with the rings and such. all the girls made the short walk to the ceremony in the spring-like weather and i had a great time capturing all their energy. hannah was glowing. but the best part was andy. andy *adores* hannah, it’s so apparent and so amazing. the moment he saw her coming down the aisle the biggest smile spread across his face, and to this day i don’t think he’s stopped smiling. (in fact i saw the happy couple just last weekend and sure enough andy = very smily! very happy!)

following the ceremony at the historical society, everyone returned to the tidewater inn for a beautiful reception where hannah + andy’s families really embraced them and offered some amazing blessings for the newlyweds. everyone was so wonderful and i feel lucky to have met them all!

hannah + andy: you guys are amazing and i’m so glad to have shared in your wedding – a true celebration of your love!

jason l brandt.

img_1185_2.jpg

jason l brandt is an LA-based actor that i met earlier this year at the sundance festival in park city…we did some impromtu headshots one afternoon and had a great time. actors really intrigue me, and it was very cool to chat with jason and try to capture his personality…i love the images that came out of this shoot and i can’t wait to work with him again. he’s currently in on a play opening this weekend in LA – the lost works of tennessee williams – and i’m heading out there and hope to get some more great shots of this incredibly talented (and wonderfully photogenic!) rising actor.

women of courage.

img_8659.jpg img_8700.jpg

last week the american women for international understanding (AWIU) celebrated it’s 40th anniversary and hosted “conversations with women of courage” at the national press club. the state department’s international women of courage awards were presented by secretary condoleezza rice the previous day, and were part of a week-long celebration to honor the award winners. that the eight recipients hailed from around the globe, each with an amazing story of valiant efforts to to promote peace and understanding against incredible odds.

it was an inspiring evening, and a true honor to be amongst such strong, resilient women fighting for justice in their own communities all over the world. from the refugee camps of somalia to the tribal areas of pakistan to the mafia-controlled regions of paraguay – these women put themselves at risk on a daily basis to bring safety, justice and hope to women who otherwise are in great risk. although i was a guest i did bring my camera, and managed to get a few shots of these outstanding women. it’s impossible to capture all that they are in a photograph, but i feel that their beauty and spirit is truly reflected in these images.
