hope, love + cupcakes.

a birthday celebration at children’s hospital.

earlier this week i photographed the most wonderful birthday party for joe robert at CNMC! the kids call him “mr. joe” and they were delighted to surprise him in the art center at children’s national medical center with a fantastic party – complete with cupcakes, bubbles, silly string, noise makers, hand-made cards, a super banner, and of course, their smiling faces!

joe robert is an amazing man and one of hospital’s great philanthropists, as well as a cancer survivor. as part of the celebration, the kids helped joe make his own BEADS necklace – an awesome arts project where patients make beaded necklaces that pay tribute to their treatments. BEADS stands for Bravery, Endurance, Achievement, Determination, Strength – qualities which abound here at CNMC in not only the patients, but in all of the doctors, staff, volunteers and donors that come together to treat and care for the children. every time i have the opportunity to visit CNMC and work with this amazing group of people i am touched and inspired beyond words.

enjoy :)

be brave & shave.

razing money for cancer.

CNMC patients help ambassador yousef al otaiba prep for his half a million dollar shave.

last week i photographed another fantastic event at children’s national medical center in dc – be brave & shave. this great initiative has generated a strong buzz (literally) and raised almost $750,000 in the first year! on friday afternoon, the united arab emirates ambassador to the united states, yousef al otaiba, shaved his head in support of the hospital’s cancer programs. the ambassador raised over $274,000 in donations, and then matched that amount for an amazing grand total of almost $550,000!

the best part of the event was that some of the children participated in the shave – rubbing shaving cream on the ambassador’s head and helping him towel off! one very special patient, a cancer survivor named carston, spoke about his experiences at CNMC and his special bead necklace symbolizing his journey to recovery. he even presented the ambassador and his girlfriend, abeer shoukry with beaded necklaces of their own! inspiring.
