dc habitat: home dedication.

last saturday, december 8, dc habitat turned over the keys to 4 brand-new houses to four very deserving families. these homes were actually the very ones that i had the privilege to work on a few months ago. i was very excited to donate my time to capturing this awesome event, and thankful to be able to be a part of it.

the proud new home owners gathered amongst a crowd of well-wishers as the homes were blessed and the ceremonial keys passed on. it was an incredible event – just being in the presence of such joy and excitement as these families each embark on a new journey with one another. every mother said the same thing – all the work, the effort, everything they do is for their children. i was so moved by their hardships and so happy for them and the opportunities they can now provide as a result of their partnership with habitat.

for more information on how you can help deserving families work towards a new future, check out www.habitat.org – a very worthy and honorable organization that truly changes lives – now and for generations to come!

lacey + drew.

lacey + drew had a perfect wedding day…
the day began at the fancy ritz-carlton in tysons for getting ready photos of lacey and her girls – these were some beautiful ladies in spectacular colors! lacey chose the most vibrant hues of purple and orange that really flattered the girls and filled their bouquets!
the celebration got underway with a very traditional catholic ceremony, followed by an elegant reception at meadowlark botanical gardens. guests were treated to a 5-piece mariachi band during cocktail hour, then enjoyed a tasty dinner, *spectacular* cake (possibly my favorite all year – except of course for edwin’s killer groom’s cake!) and a rockin’ dance floor. this family knew how to dance – from the polka to the chicken dance it was on! just watching lacey + drew dance with each other was awesome – their energy and connection was so visible, and admiring the two of them together was truly incredible for me.
we also had a ton of time for portraits (which rarely happens!) so MK and i took them all around the gardens and got some truly breathtaking images…
thank you lacey + drew for having me – it was so great to be a part of your wedding day! congrats and best of luck!

street sense.

street sense – for those who aren’t familiar with the publication – is a street newspaper here in dc. like other street newspapers, it is produced with the goal of raising public awareness on the issues of homelessness and poverty, while also creating awesome opportunities for the city’s poor and homeless.

street sense delivers 16-pages of news, feature stories, editorials, poems, photography, and other art – produced and sold by homeless or formerly homeless people, with help from volunteers and industry professionals. there are approximately 60 street sense vendors in the city – who are able to turn a profit from selling the papers and help pull themselves out of poverty with the opportunites afforded to them by working with the publication. many of the vendors have been profiled on the pages of street sense, telling their stories and sharing their lives with readers.

recently, the well-known street sense photographer cliff carle – or “the moose” as he’s known – gave an interview about his passion for photography…i always look forward to “cliff’s pics” as the section is called, and i particularly enjoy reading what cliff has to say about a particular shot – what he liked about the frame, why it worked, why it inspired him.

needless to say, i was very excited to finally run into cliff on saturday night outside of the cvs in my neighborhood. he had his street sense vendor jacket on, and a nikon D200 slung around his neck with a 300mm lens affixed, and an arm full of newspapers.

we chatted for about a half hour about photography, and despite our many differences (he prefers nikon, i’m a canon girl – he adores architectural images, i love people) we share the same love for the camera and drive for capturing images that all photographers have.before we parted i bought the latest copy of street sense, and since he had a copy of his interview with him he asked if i’d like him to sign it for me! since he goes by “the moose” he wanted to know what people call me…and he loved that people refer to me as the blonde photographer! so he addressed his note to jaime – aka “da blonde photography” girl – but not before insisting on snapping my pic!

i only wish i had my camera to return the favor…let’s just hope that one doesn’t wind up on in the next “cliff pic’s” although i would of course be incredibly honored – as cliff himself has said: “portraits, well … they’re okay. i’m not a big portrait fan. i might see something in a person’s face, so I’ll do it.”

i guess he saw something in mine.

another holiday party.

friday night the mayflower was in full holiday swing…nearly every one of the 300+ revelers came bearing a present for the toys for tots program, which were gratefully accepted by the marine volunteers. the party was the perfect blend of class and sass – glammed up guests sipped holiday cocktails and enjoyed international cuisine before getting perfectly crazy on the dance floor – a great combination! highlights included professional tango dancers, a belly dancer, an impromtu rendition of soulja boy, and my personal favorite – the chinese lion dance!

enjoy!

snow day.

dc officially got its first snow this week – after a full day (and night) of semi-serious flurries, the city lay quiet under a 3-4 inch blanket of snow…of course i couldn’t just sit inside – so i grabbed the 5D and hit the streets after dark to capture these stellar shots…

christmas time in the city…

it’s december! so i went out and bought a christmas tree – because yes, even single girls that live in studio apartments should have their own christmas tree. nevermind that i own no decorations (except for one tiny pair of peruvian dolls i bought in s. america) – little white lights alone look just fantastic on the lush green branches…
so i went to the garden district, my neighborhood urban garden shop, and selected a perfect little 5ft. fraser fir. everyone tried (unsuccessfully) to convice me to get a mini-tree, a tabletop-size version, but i wouldn’t have it. the tree looks perfect in my place and so far the cat hasn’t attacked it – although late last night i caught her drinking the water…

happy holidays!
