the zoo.

i took a spontaneous field trip to the national zoo today…i only had a little over an hour which i spent stalking the rambunctious (and tiny!) golden lion tamarind monkeys — which, by the way, roam free within a section of the zoo! it was like seeing them in the wild…watching the giant panda eat bamboo, and waiting for the beaver to build its dam…i also became fascinated with the bees pollinating the flowers that grow throughout the zoo…can’t wait to go back…very soon!

cool boston artists.

love boston + love artists = love fort point.

fort point is right across the water from the financial district of boston, a bronx-ish neighborhood that is experiencing a new surge of life: thanks (hugely) in part to the talented artisits who fill the industrial lofts that line streets, disguised as warehouses and other massive old buildings. inside each is an enclave of cool, artsy folks who produce everything from paintings and pottery to jewelry and photographs. the opportunity to check out their studios and their work comes twice a year — a ‘preview’ art walk in the spring, and then the larger open studios event in the fall.

i went up to boston a few weeks back and spent some time admiring some of my new favorite artists, check them out:

  • kristen mills :: amazing painter, currently working on creating “a hundred million” miniature paintings, i have #47.
  • jennifer farmer :: super cool jewelry maker, definitely a “for the people” kind of chick, using creative repurposed materials (think slivers of PBR cans turned into radical earrings) to make great pieces…love my red stone lariat!
  • mike hammecker :: fresh, talented painter/graphic designer who also maintains boston arts and culture online magazine.

    talk about a perfect wedding!

the weather was ideal, the location was gorgeous, everyone was so excited, and the bride and groom couldn’t have been happier.

it was such a pleasure photographing amy & kevin’s wedding a few weeks ago in taneytown, md…i had a blast capturing the moments they and their families enjoyed throughout the day. from the moment i met amy i thought she was an awesome girl and everytime i look at her photos i feel the same way!

    so happy for these newlyweds!

    july 4.

    fireworks totally amaze me.

and here’s why: because they really shouldn’t.

i mean, honestly, what’s the big deal? it’s nothing we all haven’t seen countless times before…so is it the excitement and the hype? the nostalgia? the mere thrill of the explosion?

i haven’t quite figured it out and actually, it doesn’t even matter. all that does matter is that people LOVE to watch fireworks, no matter where we are, what we are doing, who we are with, or how old we may be, or even how many times we have seen them before, especially in the middle of the summer to commemorate the 4th of july.

as the first fireworks whistled through the air this 4th, i was overwhelmed with the realization that people all over the east coast were doing the exact same thing as me at that moment.

and i decided that that itself was pretty incredible.

from the top of a roofdeck in dc i watched as firework shows lit up the perimeter of the city — bursts of light visible from every major suburb dotted the horizon — and then the real show began, exploding directly in front of me, just to the right of the washington monument, illuminating the sky right at eye level.

while this view was incredible, part of me missed seeing the sky above light up…so on saturday i decided to go to a second, weekend show, so i could once again see them from the ground below, and of course, snap a few photos…

    talk about capturing a moment!

    the grand opening of ibiza.

ibiza, the newest club in dc, opened its doors last night — a week behind schedule, and about an hour late — to throngs of people who lined up around the block for a chance to check out the scene, and glimpse the celebrities kim kardashian and dj am.
