kate michael.

just wanted to show my support for kate michael (miss dc 2006) as she prepares for her entry in the miss dc usa pageant on november 24, here in dc. my friend lee helped me put this mini-ad together to run in program brochures for the event, featuring one of the headshots from a session we did for the pageant…best of luck kate!

b&b.

i had a spectacular dining experience last week at mario batali’s fabulous b&b ristorante located in the venetian hotel + casino in las vegas. in fact, it was without a doubt the highlight of my trip.

the bartender – an awesome guy named joe – was well-versed in the cuisine and wine, and entertained me with his wit and an impromptu wine tasting. i was lucky enough to sit down next to a couple of local guys (producers for the phantom of the opera) and another traveler in town for work…we chatted intermittently and compared notes on food and wine – i had just finished day 2 of the MFE conference and had my camera in tow…can you say impromptu photo essay of my dining experience? absolutely. luckily my 5D captured some sweet images in the low light and now i can remember all the wines i sampled…

as one who savors nothing more than a fine meal and good wine, i highly recommend b&b ristorante, or any of batali’s restaurants that can boast such impeccable cuisine and stellar service.

bon appetit!

i love italian wines. i also love any chef who decides amaretto cookies should be ground atop your pasta.

viva las vegas!

once again i find myself in sin city: the surreal, electric, neon-charged strip of larger-than-life hotels, casinos, restaurants and shops in the middle of the nevada desert…beneath the blazing sun hordes of people from all over the world line the streets and fill the seats of every slot machine, pool chair and table in town…everyone seems to be everywhere all at once.
simply put, vegas is alive with energy. i’m photographing a conference at the venetian the next few days, but today i hit the streets with my camera…enjoy!

the beginning (or end) of the famous vegas strip:

habitat for humanity.

i had the awesome opportunity to work with dc habitat for humanity yesterday on their current project in northeast dc.

dc habitat just recently passed the 100th house marker and is underway on a 53-home project in the district, 27 of which are completed. contrary to popular belief habitat for humanity does not give away houses to homeless people – rather they work in partnership with low-income families to build affordable, decent homes, and sell them far below cost with no-profit, no-interest mortgages.

habitat builds homes using volunteer labor and donations, in addition to the 300 hours of “sweat equity” that future homeowners are required to complete.

along with about 25 other volunteers i spent the day working on one of 3 houses in varying stages of development,  (out of 6 that are currently under construction.) organized into three teams, we painted, laid drywall, hung vinyl siding, and stuffed insulation.

it was a tough, but very rewarding day, and i met some amazingly hardworking people – including the americorps crew leaders (yay scott!), local volunteers, and the organizers from dc habitat.

to learn more about habitat for humanity and its local affiliates visit www.habitat.org and consider volunteering or donating to this truly incredible organization.

don’t let her fool you – shabnam LOVES when i stalk her with the camera…just look at her measuring that siding!

yinibini.

i had the pleasure of running into up-and-coming designer soyini george last night, when i stopped into shake your booty looking for shoes…i was coming from andrew belcher’s farewell party at the very chic napolean, and soyini was just closing the shop…we got to talking and i checked out her work – it’s great! she’s a true hands-on designer – all of her jewelry and clothing is silk screened, embroidered, sequined or painted by hand! her line is yinibini – and you can order online or find her items at shake your booty in adams morgan. i snapped a few very quick pictures, since she and her line were *so* cute!
