karin + ted: married!

happy new year, with love.

for the first time in years, i rang the new year in quietly and in anticipation of karin + ted’s wedding on january 2nd. i can’t imagine a better way to welcome 2010 than with a beautiful winter wedding in dc with one of the kindest, smartest, most loving couples ever.

karin + ted love living in dc, and really wanted their photographs to reflect the architecture + monuments of the city. so, on this severely cold (and extraordinarily windy!) day they boldly braved the wicked weather for portraits at the capitol building. it was the first time i’ve seen the capitol grounds deserted on a sunny saturday and the guards thought we were crazy – karen looked completely stunning (and not completely freezing) while, in fact, completely strapless. we ducked into union station to warm up, and then headed to st. peter’s church on capitol hill for the ceremony. st. peter’s is a gorgeous, light-filled church and their priest was so witty + hilarious! i was also thrilled to meet + work with the absolutely fabulous sara bauleke of bella notte, whose energy + organization kept everything moving smoothly!

it was an absolutely fantastic day and i loved spending so much time with karin + ted jumping in + out of the town car for photographs, and getting to know them better through the amazing speeches from their family + friends. into the night i watched as they danced wildly, laughed happily and never stopped smiling at each other…making their wedding the best new year’s celebration ever!

cheers to karin + ted and cheers to 2010! enjoy!

NACE: post-holiday social @ policy dc.

truth. love. liberty. and the pursuit of cocktails.

this week i met up with the DC chapter of NACE for their annual post-holiday social at policy. it was an awesome venue with funky decor (love graffiti walls!) good beer, and a unique menu. a mix of NACE members + guests attended to network, learn about the committees, and witness the 2010 board induction. in addition to connecting event professionals by offering social + educational opportunities, NACE also focuses on community service. this month’s meeting featured a book drive for the dc non-profit books for america.

it was a great event made even more fun with boxci‘s innovative little photobooth and the dj stylings of gordon thorn from absolute entertainment!

enjoy!

raffle ticket insanity.

LA-SPCA: photography for social change.

la-spca.org

one of the best trips i’ve made in the last few years was a return to the big easy last april. i traveled to new orleans for an exciting and emotional week with momenta :: project katrina, led by the brilliant photographer chris usher. the momenta team is phenomenal and their mission of using photography for social change resonates deeply with my personal philosophy towards art, life and human experience. i had the opportunity to work with the LA-SPCA, a truly impressive non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of thousands of homeless + unwanted animals throughout louisiana.

my goal was to learn as much as possible about the mission + practices of the LA-SPCA and capture images that would illustrate the scope of work accomplished by the organization on a daily basis. i was immediately impressed by their innovative programs, educational initiatives, committed volunteers, dedicated staff and truly tireless officers. i spent time in every area of the facility and even went out in the field with the animal control officers to document humane law enforcement. i was particularly drawn to their feral cat program and fascinated by the people in the community who work with the LA-SPCA to help control the feral population. and i must admit, nothing compares to the experience of learning how to trap a feral cat in the wee hours of the morning on the rainy back streets of new orleans.

aside from being in complete awe of the immense amount of work that happens behind the scenes of such a large organization dealing with so many people, animals and issues, i was totally inspired + humbled by everyone i met during my time with the LA-SPCA. following hurricane katrina the shelter was completely destroyed and the resiliency and perseverance of the team and the stories they told me were unbelievable. almost five years later they have rebuilt their entire facility, launched amazing programs and are working harder than ever to serve the community. very recently the LA-SPCA launched a brand new website featuring a wealth of information as well as tons of my images – check it out!
